FORMAT C:\ that is.

Yup, it's about that time. I fubared my computer a bit when I started doing OS development (I wasn't exactly smart about it when I first started). Ever since then, I get random restarts anywhere from every couple of hours to once every couple of days. I sent in a couple reports with Dr. Watson but nothing was identified as being the problem.

Oh well, at least I do backups. It's not such a pain to do this reformatting every once in a while. However, this time does have me thinking about perhaps going out and getting Ghost to make this process even easier.

So, I suppose I will see you all on the other side. Until then, my friends!!!

Have you thought about using VPC for OS development? The thought of trashing my main PC for development purposes isn't a fun one. Plus I'd think that if you can get your OS working in VPC with it's generic drivers, it shouldn't be too difficult to add other drivers to the mix later.

At least that's how I'm thinking. Of course I'm not entirely sure how to go about doing it. I suppose you would just use the "Other" OS choice, build the image, and then do whatever to that image until your heart's content. I would then build the OS using ISOs and daemon tools or something similar so that ISO shows up as the CD in VPC. At least it works in theory. I have no actual OS code to test it out though I've been saying I wanna do my idea for a while now. Any advice? Maybe we could help each other out a bit at least in getting it working under VPC.

Well, that's exactly what I WAS doing AFTER I hosed my machine, only I hadn't realized that I already hosed my machine. I ended up just using Bochs since it was totally free of charge and did absolutely everything I needed.

Basically, it was because I was following instructions from a popular OS-development wiki. They stated that for higher-level OS algorithms and such, just do the development on your own machine so that the entire OS is already there and you can leverage that in order to not have to build the Sistine Chapel in order to paint its ceiling.

Of course, even with that, I should have been using a version of Windows installed into a virtual machine to begin with. That's what I get for being a dummy and doing something stupid. Oh well, lesson learned :).

Wow. I apparently don't know how to find web sites any more because I hadn't noticed Bochs and how suitable it is for OS development. Sure beats dealing with VPC. There's a popular OS-development wiki? What rock am I living under? I must not have been doing the correct search terms or something back when I was trying to gobble up as much information as I could.
